When one think of giant robot animation series, one will immediately have Gundam in mind. Then there is the famous Macross series (Robotech in U.S.). More recent series include variations of Gundam - Gundam Wing, Gundam Seed, Seed Destiny; Neon Genesis Evangelion etc.
A series I finished recently, called Sokyuu no Fafner, is nothing but excellence in every aspect. When head to head compared with the above animations, it measures up quite well indeed. Let me share about this series in a few ways:
A world which is invaded by powerful aliens. Theaw aliens have the ability to read the mind of human beings and absorb humans to become their own, therefore humans have little chance of defeating them. An island, whose people have lost the ability to fertilize, have the kind of DNA to deny the mind-readings of aliens. These island people also possess the technologies to build giant robots to fight the aliens - A carefully crafted storyline and backdrop produced a unique worldview of its own world.
A bunch of teenagers whose DNA have the necessary genes to pilot the giant robots. Each has strong characters and very dramatic happenings to each of them throughout the series. The series has strong emphasis on friendship and family relationships, which makes characters even more stand out. Not to mention the character design person is the same as the one who is responsible for Gundam Seed Destiny.
Not everyone will appreciate the design of the robots - called Fafner - in this series, just like not everyone would like the robot designs in Evangelion. At first, i didn't really appreciate the design. But after a few episodes I find them very appealing. Robots are all biologically linked to the pilots. So if the arm of a robot is cut, the pilot will feel the pain - Robot and Human are inter-related.
Probably one of the best anime music I have ever heard in a series. First of all, there is the mesmerizing opening theme by angela - 'Shangri-la'. Anyone who heard this song will agree with me this song is the perfect match for the series! Then, there is the series music. I especially like the chaotic piano performance whenever a festum (enemy units) attacks. Music in other parts of the anime is very good also. Ending theme is also performed by angela and it has two versions: the regular one and the instrumental one. Again, it fits perfectly.
What captures me is the unfolding of the mystery of the island and its people; the loss of pilots; the strong bonds between the teenagers; the difficult decisions of the adults sending their kids to the battlefield; the very tight and excellent robot battle scenes; the constant q&a sessions about life & death between characters. The series throws you between peaceful times and battles. Sometimes the characters will be relaxing at their homes or on the beach talking. The next moment they are already wearing their battlesuits and slaying festums.
Everything about the series strike a perfect balance - everything complements each other just right, forming an excellent series no one should miss.
Quite a nice movie. Slow-paced but very artistically made. The whole movie is shoot in Macau. A lot of portugese nostalgic scenes. Isabella Leung was quite good starring as a girl who lost her mom and found her long-seperated dad. To Man Chak starring as the dad who is a corrupted policeman. To reminds me of Tsang Chi Wai. The story revolves around how this new-found dad and daughter relationship gets long. I found it quite amusing when Isabella pretend to be her dad's lover and kicked out all his girlfriends one by one.
It is a very original story with excellent movie music (music is award-winning by the way). Not anything exciting, but well worth watching.
A few weeks ago I watched this movie called Brokeback Mountain. What a disappointment. Totally not worth my time. I felt I wasted hk$70 and wasted 2 hours of my precious time sitting in the IFC cinema.
Inside Man is a stark contrast. From start to finish, not a moment of bordom. The movie is about this gang of bank robbers who plotted a perfect plan to rob the bank. But the target is not the money but something else.
At the end of the movie, I just have to say whoever wrote the script is 'brilliantly smart' and deserves a round of applause. What a great storyline for a movie. It just makes a movie so much enjoyable and original. For the cast, Jodi Foster is her brilliant self starring as an independent negotiator. Then the main actor Denzel Washington has another brilliant performance as the police neogitiator.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who would like to watch an action and suspense movie which will make you wanting to watch til the end.
And, the movie ticket costs only hk$45.
'Gloomy Sunday' is a movie about a woman, Elona, who is the desire of many men. Story is set in Hungary during WWII. Elona's husband is the owner of the restaurant. The restaurant hired the pianist who composes a song for Elona. The song is played throughout Europe as a huge hit, but at the same time many people commit suicide because of its haunting melody. The men who love Elona died one by one eventually because the melody is sad and gloomy, like a spell casts to those who connected to it.
A beautiful and romantic movie, 'Gloomy Sunday' uses Hungary's Budapest as the backdrop of the story. The music of the movie especially captivates me as the melody itself is called "Gloomy Sunday'. Together with a tight storyline and outstanding cast, the movie 'Gloomy Sunday' is an excellent piece of work that illustrates the love between these men and Elona.

Watched Batman Returns on Independence Day. It was quite a good movie. I like the fact that this Batman movie goes back to the Tim Burton root of episode 1&2, which is of a dark and serious nature. Unlike the previous 2 Batman movies which features lots of villians and gadgets, Batman Returns focuses on the life of this rich young boy Bruce Wayne - How Bruce saw his wealthy and important parents' murder; the discovery of Bat Cave; Bruce's friendship with Rachel; Bruce's quest to strengthen himself with the shadow ninjas for years in a tibet-like mountain temple , Bruce's initial fear of bats etc. Lots of conversation between characters in the first part of movie.
The second part of the movie has a lot more actions. Talks about the shadow ninjas want to destroy Gotham City and Batman needs to stop them. Overall it is a very well-balanced movie with different ingredients to make this an very entertaining, serious, but packed with contents and actions. The only downside for me is that the movie sometimes is not very logical. Why Bruce as a billionaire will go thru all the hassle to be Batman, get all injured to save the city? Why can't he use his money to do something instead? How did that Bat Tank get away from all those police in the first place? it smashed up the freeways and police cars but the police couldn't find a clue as to its whereabouts?
I think the actors did a decent job in the movie. Not anything memorable, but ok. Lots of big-name movie stars: Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Michael Kane, Morgan Freeman. They all did a decent job in the movie. Nothing spectacular though. However they are all secondary compared to Batman starring Christian Bale. A relatively young actor which I am not quite familiar with his works.
Overall a well-made movie. As a long-time batman movie fan I have to watch it. It's a very serious movie with only occasional one-liner jokes, and the jokes are not exactly very intelligent. But for an entertaining movie, it is worth the admission of a $6.25 matinee on an independence day afternoon. SUrprisingly the theatre was quite packed although the movie has been out for at least 3 weeks.
I've been renting DVDs this month because I joined a month worth of unlimited DVD rentals. There are so many worthy DVD movies to watch this month. Since I don't go to theatres very often. Unless I watch it with others, or unless the movie is worthy to watch on the big screen($9.75 per show is so expensive), I love the idea of renting DVDs and watch it at home. So far, I watched Garden State (A-), The Terminal (A-), Eternal Sunshine and the Spotless Mind (B+) and Bourne Supremacy (B). Recently I went to theatre to watch The Aviator (B-) starring Leo Dicaprio. A so-so movie with less-than stellar performances by Leo. The story iteself is quite interesting as it chronicles millionaire Howard Hughs' obsession with modern aviation, his love affairs and his late-life disorders. The movie itself is almost 3 hours. Quite long and I think it's not necessary to be this long.
Going back to the DVD rental, I think $14.99 a month for unlimited viewing is such a good deal. Just need to watch as much to get the most bang for the buck :)

Went out to watch the movie "Closer" after seeing that ad on TV here in Houston. I must say, this is one weird and unexpected movie.
I was expecting some stellar performances from Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts. Instead it was Jude Law who stole the show. He was the best actor starring as a perverted lover who lies and pretends to be woman to seduce men online. His relationship with Natalie in the movie was polar: sometimes he sweet-talked her and at other times he told lies just to make her leave. Clive Owen plays this perverted doctor who got tricked by Jude Law online and accidentally know Julia Roberts in real life. Clive and Julia got married but Jude wanted Julia and dumped Natalie. So the whole movie was about these 4 people going nuts with each other. I think it is quite boring, because Clive eventually became a very rude husband in front of Julia, and Jude seemed to lost control of himself by being obsessed with Julia.
One thing that gives me a strong impression about this movie are the one-liners. Throughout the movie everyone seem to know each other so well they just say a word and the other understands completely. All the conversations are almost one-liners. It makes the movie flows pretty smoothly, but it wasn't enough to make this a decent movie. Natalie Portman did a pretty good job in starring as a young stripper who got hooked with Jude Law. Her appearances in this movie remind me very much of "The Professional", with pink and black short hair, a bitchy attitude, long boots. I believe her personality in "Closer" is borrowed from "The Professional".
But again, even Natalie can't save a depressing movie like "Closer". Everyone seem to hate one another and there are lots of languages throughout the movie. I'd rather watch something else and have my time spent a little more worthwhile. Gladly it was matinee for me :)
Today I watched this Japanese anime called "Tokyo Godfathers". I heard about this movie a while ago in some Chinese newspapers, saying how good is the movie and something about the director Satoshi Kon being famous. I was skeptical at first, because at first glance the movie wasn't very attractive - it features three homeless people on the cover of the DVD. But, it turns out to be a very pleasant surprise.
The movie is about these 3 homeless people, Hana the ex-drag queen, Gin the middle-aged man, and Miyuki the highschool girl who ran away from home. They lived under the same homeless shelter and search for useful things in garbage daily to survive. One day, among the garbage they found a baby-girl abandoned by her parents. The 3 decided to find the baby's parents by the goods attached to the baby - a key, some photos etc. During their search, many unexpected things happened. Through these incidents together with the baby, the 3 also found their true self. As the people in the movie says, this is a movie about love and believing of miracles.
The story is set during December in Tokyo. The graphics and so pretty with the snowy settings. You can tell the animators did a lot of work to the details of the movie. The storyline is awesome, with usual high-quality scripts which brings the audience closer and closer to the ending. Overall, the movie is a very heart-warming, x'mas feel movie which is full of surprises. Imagine a movie starring 3 unknown homeless people...I think it is quite amazing that the Japanese can make something like this. Sometimes I think if the Americans can borrow some of the concepts, we will see less blood-shed and killings in movies and the world will be a better place :P
I like the movie alot. Not because it is a Japanese anime, but because it has a tight storyline, likable characters, amazing detailed animations. And to top it off, a story about finding love in Christmas and believing in a baby bringing miracles to us! Highly recommended.
